Almost every element on Earth is formed by particles from space, including our bodies. Astrolabe seeks to reimagine our perception of body, space and time with the support of digital technologies. Astrolabe's unique visual and aural scenarios created for VR and expanded cinema installation invites the audience to experience different perspectives of space and time - travelling to augmented realms inspired by ancient star charts and maps.

This multimedia project enters into a dialogue with methodologies developed by early Asian and Pacific Island astronomers, and suggests a philosophical ideology of the movement of celestial bodies - acknowledging the oneness of all life. The digital arts and dance of Astrolabe - Whakaterenga transports audiences in an immersive space voyage of movement, sound and light.

Beyond its radical philosophy and framework, "Ecoscenography" makes a compelling case for pursuing an ecological ethic in theatre and performance design, not only as a moral imperative, but for the extraordinary possibilities that it offers for more-than-human engagement. Based on her personal insights as a leading ecological researcher and practitioner, Beer offers a rich resource for scholars, students and practitioners alike, opening up new processes and aesthetics of theatrical design that enhance the environmental and social advocacy of the field.

WSD 2022 - Breaking the Lens WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to purchase a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

Warnings: Mature audience (14+), Mature content, Mature language, Noise consideration, Violence

Interactive - Please note that this performance travels to multiple locations.

Breaking the Lens is a design-driven performance that visually explores the experience of female characters in the horror film genre. Through design, we symbolize and deconstruct horror tropes of victimhood, villainization of female bodies, exploitation, and female agency. Audiences are taken on a campy ghost tour through four distinct scenic environments inspired by iconic horror films. Our performance responds to the treatment of women in film through interactive set design, wearable art, immersive music, and projected short films. Using exaggerated imagery, stylized gore, and fantastical visuals, we satirize the male gaze and re-contextualize horror films through a feminist lens.

Recommended for participants 14 years of age or older.

COLOURING THE LIGHT: Decolonizing Lighting and Diversifying the Stage has been conceived as presentations of research, practices, observation, and experiments by the scholars, practitioners, and academicians in the domain of theatre, performance, and performing arts in general.

The teaching of Lighting Design and henceforth the design practices of lighting design has been dominated by Eurocentric approaches. The academic contents, as well as the industry, have been overly dominated by the white male. The academic publications, YouTube videos, and other public domains are dominated by the English Language. Lighting Design as a creative and technical medium has been colonized over a period of three hundred years or more. There is more than ever a need to open, instigate or even push a debate around diversity and decolonization of this medium.

This panel brings together a number of theatre artists from Saskatchewan, Canada who are challenging this historic model. Decentralizing design can radically change the entire production process and move theatre much closer to being a truly collaborative art. WSD 2022 - Digital Patterning in Costume Production - Research Presentation and Discussion WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to purchase a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

The Canadian Costumer's Digital Research Initiative explores digital pattern design software in the Costume production process. We assessed the applicability of Gerber and CLO3D patterning software.

Some of the benefits we explore are:
3D modelling, which is invaluable for digitally printing fabrics and has tools for customizing placement and scale of graphics.
Archival attributes provide easily accessible, organized patterning storage.
Virtual fittings allow Designers and Cutters to collaborate and share work at a distance.

We look forward to sharing and discussing the results of our research on the benefits and potential drawbacks of digital integration. Our research is available at QuarterlyCutter.com, and was generously funded by Canada Council for the Arts.

One shoe, another shoe - I pulled it the wrong way, I'll start again. The Dress-up Adventure, well-known for every child, is presented using the language of dance and movement art, as well as creative costumes spiced up with a lot of humour.

WSD 2022 - Ecoscenographic Approaches to Embracing the Digital Within Performance WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to reserve a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

If we are to embrace an ethical, ecological approach to making and designing performance, we must also carefully consider how we embrace the digital in our work. As makers and designers around the world are learning to look at their creative practice through the lens of environmental impact, there is so much still to learn about the role technology can play in ecoscenography.

This hybrid panel will bring together experts in sustainable arts practice, extended reality and digital scenography, as well as branch beyond the stage to the arts and culture sectors to ask: How do we embrace the digital within our eco-stages? What role, if any, can technology play in our future theatre?

This panel is ideal for designers, students, makers, teachers, and anyone who has been perplexed by this issue in their own practice.

The 1hr hybrid session will be followed by an in-person workshop activity lead by Professor Ian Garrett (in person attendees only).

WSD 2022 - Indigenous Presence within Performance and Stage Design WSD 2022 Registration is required to participate in this workshop. Full WSD 2022 Registration will allow you to reserve a ticket for this workshop if tickets are available.

Karen and Sharon (sisters) will draw upon their extensive cultural grounded experience from both a performance and design perspective for contemporary Indigenous cultural expression. This presentation will contrast and consider how Indigenous expression can be embraced ethically within stage and performance design, with specific considerations of the Anishinaabe Shiibaashka’igan (Jingle Dress). The Shiibaashka’igan (Jingle Dress) is symbolic of healing and gained international attention during the initial George Floyd political activism in June 2020 in Minnesota – Anishinaabe territory. Authenticity, as well as appropriation, remains a provoking topic as a quasi-pop culture resurgence is a current phenomenon. Within the storytelling format of this session, Karen and Sharon will share beliefs, philosophies, and present Indigenous conceptions for performance design to critically engage for pragmatic approaches in navigating how to bring Indigenous credence to their own performance design expressions. Included in this presentation will be a preliminary overview of design considerations, experiential learning, and discussion and/or defining appropriation versus appreciation for stage design.

WSD 2022 - Internship at International Arts Festivals WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Single Day Pass Registration will allow you to reserve a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

Internship at international arts festivals is valuable. It provides an opportunity for students to shorten the gap between academic and professional worlds through direct practices.

The PQ-WSD internship program was a collaboration between OISTAT and Prague Quadrennial in 2019. The program aimed at cultivating theatre talents through practice.

How does an internship influence one’s career? How to make the best use of an internship? This panel moderated by Wan-Jung Wei (OISTAT Executive Director) invites past PQ-WSD interns to share their experiences and the PQ 23 international team representatives to present PQ projects, PQ Studio opportunities, and PQ 23 opportunities for emerging designers.

WSD 2022 - L U M I N A L LAB WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to reserve a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

L U M I N A L LAB explores new ways of working with light in a performative space. It focuses on how coloured light affects the perception and experience of the spectator. Is it scientifically clear how light works on the (sub)conscious mind of the spectator and is it possible to go beyond the subjective 'feeling' of colour?

Within the framework of a PhD in the arts, a two-pronged approach is being pursued: on the one hand, the research attempts to scientifically clarify how coloured light affects the perception process and what this effect entails within a performative setting. On the other hand, the artistic approach aims to create an immersive installation that functions both as a laboratory and as an experiential space for the intended spectators.

This installation is called L U M I N A L LAB. The name is a play on words between lumen and liminality and is exactly that; a play of light that reflects on the very specific nature of light itself. Liminality, because it operates at a crossroads between the conscious and the unconscious, between science and art, but above all, because it draws the viewer's attention to the change of colours and their intensity.

WSD 2022 - Odditorio | A Performative Art Installation - Performance WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to purchase a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

Odditorio is an interactive art installation inspired by the story Sweeney Todd. It brings together Troy’s interests in immersion, spectatorship, wonder, and the merging of historical and contemporary technologies. Combining installation art, puppetry, media, and performance, Odditorio re-envisions several outcast characters as members of a freakshow in an amusement park. He merges the carnivalesque with steam punk to expose the mechanics of movement in the environment. Four-characters become oddity dolls, built from found objects/toys and inhabit their own cabinet of wonder. Collectively, these cabinets pivot, open, break apart and store objects that he uses to build an evocative installation landscape. Troy, as the creator/artist, will animate objects and space, like a puppeteer, with support of his collaborators, during two performative events for audiences. The artists explore the use of live feed layered with pre-recorded video from rehearsal to skew perception of reality, time and space. This performance is two fold, a thirty minute immersive performance and then a twenty minute audience interaction piece where the spectators manipulated and discovered moments in the artwork, which triggered my collaborators to play music, project video and/or interact with them to encourage active participation.

WSD 2022 - Persephone WSD 2022 Registration is required to attend this event. Full WSD 2022 or Day Pass Registration will allow you to purchase a ticket for this event if tickets are available.

Mature audience (14+)

Persephone is an interdisciplinary project where theatre, visual arts, and stop-motion cinema meet. This performance takes shape through human-sized puppets and the use of masks, objects manipulation and video projections.

Revisiting the Greek myth, the protagonist Persephone has a double identity. She first bears the name Kore meaning "the maiden". She lives with her mother, the goddess Demeter. The performance relates Kore's departure to the world of Hades, the god of the Underworld. Far from each other, mother and daughter face metamorphoses. Their bodies change like the cycle of the seasons. Intended for a teenager as well as an adult audience, Persephone's visual dramaturgy questions the transmission from mother to daughter.

By gaining a new perspective on discarded produce, we can all play a part in reducing food waste!” — Vanessa, Reviewer (Goodyfeed)

Centring "food waste management" as a means for cross-cultural exchange, this unforgettable experience invites participants to reflect on their culinary traditions over a two-course meal.

Each course consists of a family recipe from a migrant homecook living in Calgary and a matching Singaporean dish - adapted to feature native ingredients and salvaged produce. Mealtime conversations are facilitated and documented by roaming interviewers, known as “kaypoh (busybody) kings/queens”.

https://worldstagedesign.submittable.com/submit

There is no fee to apply for this workshop; if you are accepted into the workshop the fee for participation is $25 CAD.

Accepted participants will be provided with a code so that they can purchase a ticket for the workshop.

The deadline for applications is July 21, 2022 at 5pm local Calgary time (UTC-6).

This workshop is part of WSD 2022 Living Legends Activities.

Pamela Howard has designed this devised artwork workshop for emerging designers and student participants; inspired by El Greco’s painting “The Plan and View of Toledo’ and writings from the period through today. The artwork will explore ‘the universality of displacement’, looking at immigration/refugees and how art gives the dispossessed the ability to triumph over their personal circumstances.

Known for her playful drawing techniques, Pamela will mentor students who will work in teams of two to apply her methods of image creation that synchronize colour, sound and word. Participants will paint, sketch and collage one section of a two metre high by sixty metre long assemblage diorama that will provide a continuous narrative about immigration, identity, events, and ancestry. Each team will be responsible for building an image that illustrates a part of the story, but they must also address transitions from the panels before and after, requiring highly collaborative skills. Simultaneously, digital composer Melike Ceylan will be rehearsing and building a score of music and sounds that will integrate with the visual storytelling.

The final presentation of the Toledo Panorama will be before an audience, presented as a Promenade Concert.

Workshop sessions are:
July 25, 3-Hour Digital Session - 8:00am-11:00am (UTC-6)

Tickets include all 5 sessions on August 7, 8, and 9.

Recommended for participants 17 years of age or older.

Associated Designers of Canada is presenting Training the Eye: 2 ½ days of design labs to develop skills in colour interaction in theatrical environments, within a safe and inclusive learning space. The inspiration is that heart-sinking comment at the production desk “why can’t we see their faces?” Using a tool-kit of design elements anchored in light and pigment-vision colour theory, emerging and established theatre creators will develop solutions by lighting various scenarios of inclusive skin tones, makeup, costume, and digital and built scenery, and the implications for digital capture. Prior experience with colour theory is not required. Our preference is for everyone to attend all sessions.

Session 1 - August 7, 9:30am-12:30pm: Colour theory for pigment and incandescent light

Session 2 - August 7, 2:00pm-5:00pm: Colour theory for pigment and LED light; Stage makeup fundamentals
